Sophie Hunter is an award-winning British artist whose work spans performance, theatre, opera, film and installation, ranging from intimate, site-specific pieces to major operatic stagings. She has directed around the world, collaborating with leading artists, musicians, cultural institutions and festivals across Europe and the United States.
Passionate about reflecting contemporary issues through art, Hunter created the environment-focused performance and multimedia installation Salt of The Earth which premiered in Venice and toured to Climate Week in New York and the United Nations Conference in Nice last year. Through an immersive and multidisciplinary approach, Salt of The Earth seeks to make the climate emergency resonate personally and collectively and foster a sense of shared responsibility to take preventative action. At the heart of her work is a belief that storytelling is a powerful force for inciting and inspiring change.
After the success of the 2024 Venice premiere, Sophie Hunter has joined forces with the UKCEH ecologist Angus Garbutt to create the Salt of The Earth Exemplar Project, a cultural and scientific initiative which twins salt marshes across the world showcasing success of restoration and driving the UN Saltmarsh Breakthrough targets to deliver on global restoration goals by 2030.
